An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

We consume food saturated with harmful pesticides, chemicals, flavour enhancers, colouring agents and preservatives such as MSG, dyes and aluminum on a daily basis. Not to mention harmful beverages like alcohol, soda, coffee, and did I mention alcohol? Although our bodies are designed to automatically eliminate and neutralise toxins through the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymphatic system and skin, unfortunately in today’s environment, with the pollution in the air and the food we consume, it’s hard for the body to keep up. Many times the toxins get left over and eventually accumulate causing headaches, depression, asthma, hypertension, memory loss, insomnia, diabetes and even cancer. Maybe getting a detox every once in a while can assist the body with the cleansing process.

Basically, when you detoxify your body, you cleanse the body’s system, opening the door to healing and rejuvenation; in other words, you’re turning back the hands of time on ageing. Our chemical-heavy diet is often filled with animal protein, saturated and trans fats, caffeine and alcohol _ all of which drastically changes our internal ecosystem. Getting a detox can help our bodies eliminate these toxic accumulations that result in mucus, parasites and worms, excess fat and cellulite and many more unsightly and odorous things.

You know it’s a good time to detox when you feel toxic or poisoned. This often happens after the holidays when you’ve indulged on lots of goodies. The very first sign you’ll get is a feeling of tiredness and sluggishness. All the energy that is present inside the body will begin to diminish along with the clarity of your mind. If you sense something wrong with the way you think and feel, you should use that as a signal to get some detoxification.

After the cleansing process, you’re likely to gain supple skin and complexion and experience weight loss, fewer headaches, more energy, plus a clearer sense of thinking. You’ll feel a more positive outlook on life with more willpower and fewer diseases and sicknesses.

Detoxification through special cleansing diets and colonic cleansing are the most common ways to assist your body’s natural self-cleaning system. You can detox through a diet plan such as fruit juice fasting, coffee enema, water fasting and various others. I personally prefer the fruit juice fasting as it supplies an abundance of nutrients, including enzymes and calories to reduce the cleansing intensity to a more comfortable level. Detoxification can also be done by indulging in a sauna, as we all know the skin secretes toxins in the form of sweat. For those with bowel or constipation problems, colonic cleansing will be beneficial. Of course, in the long run, you’ll need to lighten your toxin load by reducing your intake of alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, refined sugars and saturated fats, all of which act as toxins in the body and are obstacles to your healing process.

For a first timer, you can start with fasting half day on a weekend, when you stay at home to make it easier because you’ll likely to use less energy plus it’s easier to prepare the juices. If you don’t have a problem then you can eventually do a whole day. I wouldn’t recommend you do longer than this without a doctor’s advice. The period of fasting depends on your health and how often you do it depends on how often you feel the need for it.

If you’re opting to do a half day juice fasting, I suggest you have a light meal, avoid coffee and any caffeinated drinks the night before. When you wake up, start with some carrot juice as it is good for your liver and is rich in vitamins. It is also high in calories, which is good for a morning start.

Use a juicer to prepare your drinks, so they are fibre-free as fibre can stimulate the digestive system, and you want it to be relaxed, virtually giving it a holiday feel. Next you can try wheat grass which adds alkaline and balances the pH level of your system. You can mix it with other fruits like apple, pineapple or if you’re concerned with your body weight then celery or cucumber might be good choices. Variety is best so you get a complete set of vitamins and minerals. Avoid any artificial seasoning or flavourings in your juices and if you feel dizzy then you should stop and try it again next time.

On the day you’re fasting, do not exert your body with intense exercise, instead only do stretches, yoga or other relaxing and mild workouts. If you have a history of metabolic problems, hormonal problems or are on medication, consult a doctor before considering fasting.

Colon cleansing can be done with supplements or via colonic irrigation. Supplements can be taken orally or through the rectum in order to force the colon to expel waste. Another easy way is by using a colonic machine which pumps water through a tube inserted into your rectum, forcing the rectum to flush out fluids through another tube. This process can last up to an hour, has no downtime and is fairly safe because it involves no use of chemicals or anything artificial.
